The seemingly ordinary details of everyday life depicted in the film form the warmest and most moving spiritual foundation of China’s outstanding traditional culture. The story, centred on qiaopi (overseas Chinese remittance letters), the migration to Southeast Asia, and overseas Chinese watching over and caring for their hometowns, touched the shared memories of overseas Chinese in the audience and resonated with them emotionally. The film’s portrayal of the older generation of overseas Chinese enduring hardship, striving to build better lives, and longing for their homeland deeply moved many viewers, who could readily relate to their experiences.

The film 《給阿嬤的情書 Dear You》 has struck a powerful chord among Chinese Australians and members of the Chinese diaspora in Australia. From the early Chinese labourers who crossed the seas to help build Australia, to the growing number of young Australians of Chinese descent who are putting down roots locally and integrating into mainstream society, generation after generation has sought to balance “going out into the world” with “remembering where they came from.” Although changing times have seen letters gradually replaced by instant messaging, family bonds, nostalgia for one’s homeland, and cultural identity remain the spiritual ties that connect Chinese communities at home and abroad.
